What is shared webhosting?
A single web server has the ability not to host just one site, but hundreds of various websites. Hosting more than one web site on a server is known as shared hosting. Since more than one site is housed on a server, the cost of web hosting is significantly less. If the load or the stress on the server is managed properly, shared hosting is a high quality and more feasible option.
Since shared hosting is shared, this implies that your site may share an IP address with another web site. Since some sites try to spam search engines, the IP address might be blocked. However; this problem rarely occurs and has not occured in my experiences with shared hosting. If you view this as a potential issue, you might consider virtual hosting instead.
Shared hosting will also normally imply that you share the same IP address with the other web sites, and there is some concern that a web site that does try to spam a search engine may get that IP address blocked. I have used shared hosting for several web sites for many years and never encountered any problems. I must assume that the search engines are clever enough to realise that most web sites use shared hosting. However, if you like to avoid this potential problem you might consider virtual hosting with your own IP address.
